5 Ways to Translate Fall Runway Trends for the Office

Runway trends are many things: inspirational and directional, yes, but rarely work-friendly. A bit of clever styling is transformative though, making even the most out-there looks suitable for a conference room or meeting with clients. Here, subdued and statement takes on five of the trends we’re most excited for this fall (because saving fashion for the weekend is no way to live).

The Trend: Velvet

Rich, sumptuous velvet is a sure thing for fall 2017. Look for the fabric in office-friendly pieces like tailored suiting, and follow the same approach you usually do to telegraph you’re in command: Pair similar fabrics for a cohesive vibe and favor clean lines like a single-button blazer and straight-leg trousers.

For a more relaxed office, play up the trend factor via a bold silhouette. A knee-length dress layered over loose trousers is an undeniably chic attention-grabber; just keep accessories to a minimum to avoid looking costumey.

The Trend: Glitter Boots

Super sparkly boots were one of the runway’s highest wattage trends—and seemingly its least office-appropriate. To make it work, limit the square inches allotted. Wear a high pair with a calf-length skirt, and rely on classics to finish the look. For a subtle take, find a metallic ankle bootie in a sock style.

The Trend: Couch Florals

It’s useless trying to subdue large-scale floral patterns; embrace their boldness instead. If your workplace is conservative, try a statement coat in the pattern—you’ll make an impression coming and going, with an outfit underneath that fits the MO of your particular office.

When mining inspiration from sofas and side chairs, don’t get tied up in the “floral” part—a graphic print with petal-like swirls has the same effect. If you’re in a creative field, pick a statement number from the fall collections (with matching accessories if you’re feeling especially daring).
